What Happens Before a Product Reaches the Showroom

Written by Melrose | March 18, 2026.

As we prepare for product review in April, 1,000 new concepts have arrived at our headquarters. Each one represents a direction, a detail, or an idea for the seasons ahead.

Not all of them will move forward.

Product review is one of the most important stages in our development cycle. It is where ideas become tangible, and where thoughtful editing begins. Samples are physically reviewed by our Product Development team, designers, marketing, and company leadership including our company Founder. Seeing each piece in person allows us to evaluate it not just as a concept, but as a finished product that will live in a retail environment.

“It’s one thing to see a concept on paper. It’s another to hold it in your hands. That’s where the real evaluation begins,” says Jackie, Sample Manager at Melrose International.

During review, every sample is examined carefully. We look at:

  • Design integrity. Does the piece hold up visually from every angle?
  • Material and finish quality. Does it feel substantial and well-executed?
  • Scale and merchandising potential. How will it anchor or support a retail display?
  • Margin viability. Does it protect profitability for our retail partners?
  • Collection balance. Does it strengthen the overall assortment rather than duplicate what already exists?

This process is deliberate. While the number of incoming concepts can vary season to season, the outcome is always the same: a refined collection built with intention.

Not every idea advances to the final assortment. That editing is part of our responsibility. Retailers do not benefit from volume alone. They benefit from thoughtful curation, cohesive storytelling, and products that feel considered before they ever reach the showroom.

Product review is where that discipline takes shape.
