What Happens Before a Product Reaches the Showroom

As we prepare for product review in April, more than 1,000 new product concepts have arrived at Melrose International headquarters. Each sample represents a new direction, a fresh design detail, or an emerging trend that could shape future home décor collections. While every concept begins with potential, not all of them will move forward.
Product review is one of the most important stages in our product development cycle. It is where ideas become tangible and thoughtful editing begins. Before a product ever reaches a retailer's shelf or showroom display, it must first earn its place within the collection.
Samples are physically reviewed by our Product Development team, designers, marketing department, company leadership, and our Founder. Seeing each piece in person allows us to evaluate it not simply as a design concept, but as a finished product that will ultimately live in a customer's home and a retailer's store.
"It's one thing to see a concept on paper. It's another to hold it in your hands. That's where the real evaluation begins," says Jackie Demoss, Sample Manager at Melrose International.
During review, every sample is examined carefully. We look at:
- Design integrity. Does the piece hold up visually from every angle?
- Material and finish quality. Does it feel substantial, durable, and well executed?
- Scale and merchandising potential. How will it anchor or complement a retail display?
- Margin viability. Does it provide strong value while protecting profitability for our retail partners?
- Collection balance. Does it strengthen the assortment rather than duplicate products already offered?
Beyond evaluating each product individually, our team also considers how every item contributes to the overall story of the collection. Color palettes, textures, seasonal trends, and display opportunities are all taken into account to ensure retailers receive assortments that feel cohesive and easy to merchandise.
This collaborative process is deliberate. While the number of incoming concepts varies from season to season, the objective remains the same: build collections that are intentional, commercially viable, and aligned with what today's consumers are looking for.
Not every idea advances to the final assortment, and that editing process is one of the greatest values we provide our retail partners. Retailers don't benefit from endless product choices alone. They benefit from carefully curated collections, thoughtful merchandising solutions, and products that have already been evaluated through multiple perspectives before ever reaching the showroom.
Product review is where creativity meets strategy. It is where inspiration is refined, decisions are made, and future collections begin to take shape. By investing time in this process, Melrose International ensures every collection is designed with quality, purpose, and retail success in mind.
